The oft-discussed (and always ignored) idea of a playoff — Obama’s proposal being eight teams, three rounds, one survivor — is exactly what most college football fans have been wanting for years. These five matchups would be every bit as fair as what the BCS figures to produce with its computer rankings, pollster input and a whole laundry list of convoluted rules. But USC fans (who welcome Oregon State to the Pac-10 title so that their team can go to a different BCS bowl) recall beating Michigan and Illinois by a combined 81-35 in the last two Rose Bowls. I know, Ohio State might conjure up dismal memories of back-to-back losses in the last two national championship games by a combined 41 points. Let’s not get giddy about either ’Bama or OU, although I’m not throwing away an opportunity to create a rematch of the January 2004 Sugar Bowl when it was for all the marbles — Nick Saban (then-LSU) over Bob Stoops. So, let’s invite (in alphabetical order) Boise State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, TCU, Texas Tech and Utah to Tempe, Ariz. read more
